hog Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 I left school with nothing, worked here for 20 odd years. Worked my way up from loading bay loader to now full time system developer. All self taught along with training stuff supplied by work......Oh and I'm 39 Quote My website
steved Posted May 9, 2003 Posted May 9, 2003 Andy, The IT job market should open up here in a year or five, and the grass will be greener on both sides again. :) Until then, it's worth looking for a new job in your spare time (*cough* perhaps while you're at work?) - but I wouldn't waste too much energy on it. .steve Quote zig?
a_jam_sandwich Posted May 15, 2003 Author Posted May 15, 2003 Well they just came back to me with a offer omg £500 increase what planet they on??? And they recon its a fair wage for doing all there coding web & app Whats everyone else think Andy Quote Code today gone tomorrow!
dsgreen57 Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Guess its going to depend on how long you have been with the company... can't expect too much within the first year, but after that you can start to earn more else where... I have found the key is moving company (companies aren't too keen with dramatically hiking your pay up when they got away with paying you a low wage before.) Unless they really don't want to loose you, lol. Quote
*Gurus* divil Posted May 15, 2003 *Gurus* Posted May 15, 2003 I don't think that is anywhere near what they should be paying you, personally. At that level of wage I could expect frequent raises of not less than £1000 as you show to them how good you are and work your way out of that area at the beginning of your first programming job. a_jam_sandwich Posted May 15, 2003 Author Posted May 15, 2003 oh bear in mind ive been coding for 7 years in 3 companies. Thx for all your comments Andy Quote Code today gone tomorrow!
nibsy Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 I find it difficult to comprehend that as you have moved companies twice and you haven't exceeded your current salary. Quote
dsgreen57 Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Well with seven years programming experience... you should at least be on over £16,000 depent on skill set, etc. What youv'e said I would expect you to be on about £20,000 time for a change of company. Quote
hog Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 ??? but dudes I'm on £24K and am not even in the private sector! I have been programming now for 14 yrs but only full time in the last 3-4 yrs. Well with seven years programming experience... you should at least be on over £16,000 depent on skill set, etc. this seems not of this world? Quote My website
wyrd Posted May 15, 2003 Posted May 15, 2003 Well... if what they're paying you isn't cutting it and you can make more working at the local Burger King, then just tell them what they need to pay you, otherwise give them a nice friendly "would you like fries with that?" Seriously, if it's not enough to live off of (or you're barely scraping by), then you should search for another job. But don't quit until you actually find one. ;) Quote Gamer extraordinaire. a_jam_sandwich Posted May 15, 2003 Author Posted May 15, 2003 good advice I am now looking for another but staying in this crappy job Cheers all Andy Quote Code today gone tomorrow!
*Gurus* divil Posted May 16, 2003 *Gurus* Posted May 16, 2003 If you've been programming such applications for 7 years I would expect at least £25k as a bare minimum.
