API and winsock replacements

I was goin to upgrade because i usualy like to code things on the newest stuff. Anywho, i am very comfortable with VB6, but after i installed .net, things changed. API was wipped compleatly. I cant find it anywhere. I heard it was replaced by something, can you guys tell me what, also, what is microsoft reccoemnding over winsock now?

No, API is still alive and kicking:

Although there are now many API functions wrapped by the framework.

 

As for winsock, you'd now use the System.Net.Sockets namespace.
