mandelbrot Posted July 31, 2007 Posted July 31, 2007 (edited) Hi Marble_Eater, Just wnated to know how you're getting on with your Dvorak keyboard... Paul. Edited July 31, 2007 by mandelbrot Quote
Leaders snarfblam Posted July 31, 2007 Leaders Posted July 31, 2007 Wow, a thread about me. I must be special. Or something. To be honest, since I've started trying to use the Dvorak keyboard I've moved and changed computers for a while. I haven't had the time and patience to use Dvorak lately, and, likewise, I haven't had the time or inclination to change my signature. But now that I have things back in order, I think I'm going to give Dvorak another go. The first two days were a little difficult, but within a week or I was typing dvorak at a third of the speed I could with QWERTY, and having used it in the past, I think it will probably be easier this time around. The idea, of course, is to eventually be able to type faster and more easily... eventually. And to show people that I'm hardcore. Quote [sIGPIC]e[/sIGPIC]
mandelbrot Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 Yeah - I looked Dvorak keyboards up on Wiki ... mainly after seeing your sig - I thought it to be some kind of elaborate joke. ;) I have a Mac and PC at home. One uses a standard British keyboard layout and the other an American; I always have finger problems when switching back, especially when writing code. Does anyone else use a Dvorak?... Quote
mskeel Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 And to show people that I'm hardcore.I'd been considering switching myself just for that reason. Sort of like learning a new language, total immersion is probably the "easiest" way to learn. Now to just find a time when its ok for my productivity to drop for a week or two. Any tips or hints from your experiences with it so far? (Assuming you aren't kidding, of course. This is no joke? You're actually leaning to use a Dvorak keyboard?) Quote
MrPaul Posted August 1, 2007 Posted August 1, 2007 Dvorak and typos I'm wondering if anybody else got a chuckle out of the irony of mandlebrot needing to edit his one-line post for typos - and still leaving one in! Maybe a Dvorak keyboard would help. :p Quote Never trouble another for what you can do for yourself.
mandelbrot Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 Re: Dvorak and typos ROFL! Missed that one!! If I'm this bad on a standard QWERTY then I supose I can expect injuries from using a Dvorak for the first few weeks!! ;) Quote
mandelbrot Posted August 1, 2007 Author Posted August 1, 2007 PS: I don't know if you wanted this, marble_eater, but I've fixed your avatar so it continues... Quote
Leaders snarfblam Posted August 1, 2007 Leaders Posted August 1, 2007 PS: I don't know if you wanted this, marble_eater, but I've fixed your avatar so it continues... I appreciate the effort, but the reason I only looped the animation four times was so that it didn't drive anyone insane while they are trying to use the forum. Also, don't use Dvorak unless you are healthy enough for typing activity. (HAHA! Get it? It's a JOKE!) But, again, thanks anyways. Here, have a smiley. :) And, mskeel, I am using a Dvorak keyboard layout right now, as I type. My advice? Yes, total immersion is ideal with a couple of exceptions. At this point I simply can not program with the Dvorak keyboard. It is too cumbersome and I can't maintain my train of thought. To make matters worse, in addition to the letters being moved, the punctuation is different too. Also, I do feel the need for a break from Dvorak now and then. Quote [sIGPIC]e[/sIGPIC]
mskeel Posted August 2, 2007 Posted August 2, 2007 ...I am using a Dvorak keyboard layout right now' date=' as I type.[/quote']I find this fascinating. What kinds of WPM are you getting with QWERTY vs. Dvorak? How is it switching between the two layouts? I've joked about switching to Dvorak for years and how freakishly awesome and hard core it would be to be pro with it. I am feeling quite inspired and am printing out the layout as I type right now. Here it goes... Quote
Leaders snarfblam Posted August 2, 2007 Leaders Posted August 2, 2007 I don't really know my WPM for either QWERTY or Dvorak, but I'm still pretty slow with the Dvorak layout, especially since I'm out of practice. It is actually surprisingly easy to jump back and fourth between the two. I have a cheap keyboard that I moved the keys around on. It really didn't help me much (though it could help you, who knows). It's strange, but I find it easier to type when I'm looking at neither the screen nor the keyboard. It must distract my visual cortex (or some junk like that). Quote [sIGPIC]e[/sIGPIC]
mandelbrot Posted August 3, 2007 Author Posted August 3, 2007 But' date=' again, thanks anyways. Here, have a smiley. :)[/quote'] Why thank-you, marble_eater! <mandelbrot straightens ties up on splinted fingers>... I may just give a Dvorak a go, if I can get one round here... I think I may take a couple of weeks off work to get used to it, though... I've joked about switching to Dvorak for years and how freakishly awesome and hard core it would be to be pro with it. I am feeling quite inspired and am printing out the layout as I type right now. And you called techmanbd a freak.....!! Quote
mskeel Posted August 3, 2007 Posted August 3, 2007 And you called techmanbd a freak.....!!It's true. It takes one to know one. :D I've completed the first few lessons on this great free site. I think the best thing about my experience so far is that there is a hot key to switch keyboard layouts at any time. I've got mine set to alt-shift. Hit it and boom -- frgp cb yd. ekrpat nafrgy! mandelbrot Posted August 6, 2007 Author Posted August 6, 2007 LOL! Great free site! Nice one! ;) Quote
