Morpheusoptic Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I have been using VB6 Professional at school to compile programs I have made in VB6 Working Model at home. I am about to start making shareware apps so I would like to have my own VB, however wherever I look to buy vb6, all I can find is VB.NET. I went on Microsoft's Website to check the compatibility of .NET on Win XP Home Edition b/c I knew it wasn't compatible with Win9x/Me, but on the Microsoft Sys Req page, it says I need XP Pro for it to run. Now some websites tell me it will run on both, some say only XP Pro. Has anybody succesfully installed and ran VB.NET on and XP Home Computer? Also, I am not a full fledged programmer yet and I only want to spend the money for the Standard Edition right now, are there any major differences b/t that standard and professional versions? AndreRyan Posted March 4, 2003 Posted March 4, 2003 I upgraded to XP Pro a while ago but I had VS.Net running perfectly on XP Home, what exactly is wrong?(Microsoft recommends XP Pro because its got Internet Information Services 5.1 built into it for making Web Components but you can still use XP Home. Microsoft set it so you can only install it on Win2000,WinXP Home,WinXP Pro) Quote .Net allows software to be written for any version of Windows and not break like Unmanaged applications unless using Unmanaged procedures like APIs. If your program uses large amounts of memory but releases it when something else needs it, then what's the problem?
*Gurus* divil Posted March 4, 2003 *Gurus* Posted March 4, 2003 The confusion lies in the fact that VS.NET will only run on Win2k and WinXP (both versions), whereas the .net applications you create with it will run on Windows 98 and later.
