fguihen Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 ok, when i installed VS 2006 i expected my pc to be very slow when using it. my pc is a bit slower, but not too bad. the problem is on windows load up. before anyone logs on , before the logon screen, there is a screen that says " windows is starting up". since i installed VS 2006 my computer gets stuck on this screen for about 5 minutes each time i turn on the pc. it is really annoying. has anyone seen this and how is it treated? *Experts* Nerseus Posted November 14, 2005 *Experts* Posted November 14, 2005 Did you install everything for VS2005? Maybe you have a slower box that's now trying to run IIS and SQL Server, for example? Did you install any of the new Team System? Check a couple of things, these are mostly generic: 1. Run msconfig (just Start->Run) and go to the Startup tab. Make sure you only have checked what you want. 2. Go to the services tab of msconfig or just open the Services component through Start->Programs->Administrative Tools. Look for anything that's running now or marked "Automatic". Make sure they're components you want. If you're not sure then now might be a good time to start peeking :) Five minutes seems quite excessive for a Windows Startup. I wouldn't be surprised at 5 minutes if you are running Windows 2000 Advanced Server (not a development OS anyway), but a standard Windows XP with VS 2005 shouldn't take that long. -ner Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. fguihen Posted November 14, 2005 Author Posted November 14, 2005 i was running IIS and sql server ages before i installed VS 2005. as for services, when i first loaded on XP pro, i configured what services i wanted to be automatic or manual or disabled, and i now have very few non essential services running. i have almost no apps loading on startup . i have done a windows repair on my installation, but that didnt fix the problem. thanks for the suggestions anyway Quote
*Experts* Nerseus Posted November 14, 2005 *Experts* Posted November 14, 2005 You may try asking on a Windows forum as well - something about how to log what windows is doing while "starting up". I don't much about Windows startup, but I'd bet that there is some way to log what it's doing, or what it's trying to do. One last question - any chance you had a beta copy of Visual Studio installed? I know the manual deinstallation instructions are huge. I wonder if something got leftover and is causing some kind of conflict? I worry because I still have beta 2 at home but have the DVD of the full 2005 ready to test with :) Let us know what you find out! Who knows when it could happen again? -ner Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Denaes Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 (edited) Same problem here so far. Well the day after I installed SQL 2005 Developer & VS Pro 2005 I had this huge hang time on boot. If it happens again today I'll see if there is anything to be done about it. What it reminds me of is back in windows 98 (or about that era) when it would take like 5 minutes to boot, there was probobly some driver or service being called that was taking too long or timing out. At that point there was a utility you downloaded which showed you everything set to startup, then you restarted and it showed you at what time and how long everything took to load and their status (like if they failed). At least back in those days, once you knew what was taking the time, you could disable/upgrade/replace the faulty driver/service. <update> This morning things did take longer to boot than normal, but nowhere near the length of time it took previously. Maybe a minute longer as opposed to 5 minutes longer on Thursday. </update> Edited November 15, 2005 by Denaes Quote
