It is not needed, but together with a DataSet it is easier.

 

But if you would invest some time in reading the ADO.NET basics,

you will know more about it.

Besides the GREAT comment by FZelle, it would also depend on the database. Access, you might use OleDbDataAdapter - SQL Server you would use SqlDataAdapter, iSeries you might use iSeriesDataAdapter or OdbcDataAdapter depending on what you have installed.
