chak Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Hey all. First poster here! :p Anywho, I'm running Visual Studio .NET on my machine and am running a web server (Windows 2003, IIS 6, etc.) on the LAN. I can use Visual Studio to connect to that web server and make changes to my project without problems. However, I cannot access it from outside my LAN. When I try to connect to this web server from work, Visual Studio just times out. Do I have to route any ports other than 80 (HTTP) in the firewall to make the connection to that web server? I can browse web sites and even use the Server Administration via the web but I cannot get Visual Studio to connect. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Quote
Administrators PlausiblyDamp Posted January 19, 2005 Administrators Posted January 19, 2005 IIRC you will need to open the ports for either Front Page extensions (bad) or to access the file share directly (bad). chak Posted January 19, 2005 Author Posted January 19, 2005 IIRC you will need to open the ports for either Front Page extensions (bad) or to access the file share directly (bad). Curious. Why would opening the ports for Front Page extensions be bad? How is anyone else supposed to use Front Page if the ports are locked down? Or are there issues with Front Page extensions that I'm not aware of? Thanks for the reply! Quote
Administrators PlausiblyDamp Posted January 25, 2005 Administrators Posted January 25, 2005 Although a lot of the issues have been resolved the front page extensions can still cause a security risk, anyone who exploits these security holes will have the potential to manipulate the webserver settings, giving access via the internet to this service opens up the potential for a lot of abuse.
