How on earth do i start off learning about controls?

Hey guys, i've been googling and googling for some specific guidelines which would enable me to create nice custom controls, but every tutorial i've found is just too specific to the example they're showing, it doesn't demonstrate why they do some things and what you should be essentially doing when you create your own controls, does anyone have a good tutorial guide on explaining how to do it, or would anyone point me to the right direction on what to start off with first?

Have a look in our Tutor's corner there are several examples of authoring windows controls / control extenders in there.

Hmmmm i've read alot of the tutorial guides as well, but alot of the guides assumes too much, i've read into many of the guide Divil makes, but there's alot of terminology and things in which he does that isn't quite specifically explained for his examples.

Controls are a large topic in their own right - it may be easier if you have either a specific aim in mind or provide a bit more detail about the areas you are having problems with.

Hmmmm i'm more geared to learning it in general, but in this case, is there any examples on talking about owner drawing listboxes, like how some apps have listboxes with icons in it, similar to how Outlook has it. Thanks
