Just another option - I've used both object/Variant and the DateTime.MinValue in different pieces of code. The object stuff is more readable, but requires more casting (more coding and slight loss of performance though negligable). The "known" value allows specific type casting (always a DateTime) but might require conversion when going to the DB. Also, eliminates the use of that one value for any real data.
