if i have directX from a game cd installed, do i need to install the SDK?

i have installed directX9 from a game cd, but i cannot run some directX code i have as it says it cant find direct X references, do i need the sdk? i have windows and directX on one partition and Visual studio on another partition. could this be a problem?

Yep, you need the SDK for sure. The DX9 runtimes are different than the development libraries.
