Rick_Fla Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 No, not the team, the storms. For those that live in Florida with me, please be safe and do as they say. I have watched the TV over the last few days and heard of too many preventable deaths/injuries! For those not in Florida, please put us all in your thoughts! samsmithnz Posted September 9, 2004 Posted September 9, 2004 You Florida people are crazy. Its not like you never get hurricanes, you get 3 or 4 everyyear. Good luck though... Quote Thanks Sam http://www.samsmith.co.nz
Rick_Fla Posted September 9, 2004 Author Posted September 9, 2004 To be honest, most miss us and hit the Carolina's. We seemed, for the longest time, protected in a strange way. Guess it is catching up this time. Quote "Nobody knows what I do until I stop doing it."
*Experts* Bucky Posted September 9, 2004 *Experts* Posted September 9, 2004 I don't mean to sound cold-hearted (we experienced Bob many years ago), but I don't understand why anyone would bother with a flimsy balloon-frame building when it's being built in Florida, the Hurricane Capital of the World. Geodesic Domes are extremely strong, they look cool, and there is tons of room on the inside for room arrangements (since there need not be any supporting walls to hold up the roof like in a conventional home; the roof holds itself up). When Bob hit us, a tree fell on our dome home. It was a good-sized pine tree, at that, and there was no damage whatsoever. Is it any wonder that radar domes on Antarctica (which has arguably the harshest climates on the planet, with 200+ MPH winds) are geodesic domes? I feel for you guys down there, but a little common sense goes a long way in such a climate. Just my two cents. *Experts* DiverDan Posted September 10, 2004 *Experts* Posted September 10, 2004 My thoughts are with all you folks in Florida that were affected by the hurricane. My thoughts are also with all you folks in Flordia with the upcoming election and your past ballot counting problems. And geodesic domes have always been the best, and cheapest, form of housing since their onset. The strength of a circle is better than the strength of an ellipse, ie. egg. I wonder if they come in a chateau or tutor style yet? Quote Member, in good standing, of the elite fraternity of mentally challenged programmers. Dolphins Software

Rick_Fla Posted September 10, 2004 Author Posted September 10, 2004 Ok, so we can't count :) I think living down here I was very embarrassed by the ballot issue we had. I am sure there are many "better" ways to build houses to help prevent damage from high winds and such. But if you drove around the area like I did the other day. You would see that newer homes held together pretty well, while older homes had their roofs blown off. I think trees and flooding is causing the biggest issues. With Ivan on it's way, I would not be surprised if some people did not rebuild and just moved away. Maybe I can finally get a house for a good price :) Quote "Nobody knows what I do until I stop doing it."
ThePentiumGuy Posted September 11, 2004 Posted September 11, 2004 I hope you guys keep safe :). MAN that must be scary .. living through a hurricane storm. "My Thoughts are with you (or something like that)" I'd sugest you guys umm... run? I think tornado season's coming up, and one almost hit us hard (in mass) a few years ago, but it wasn't a "5" tornado probably a 2 or a 3. Well anyways, <i know nothing about hurricane saftey> - try to keep under the ground or something (or is that for tornadoes) ;). -The Pentium Guy Quote My VB.NET Game Programming Tutorial Site (GDI+, Direct3D, Tetris [coming soon], a full RPG.... you name it!) vbprogramming.8k.com My Project (Need VB.NET Programmers) http://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/ResolutionRPG

Jay1b Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 (edited) Dome houses would be cool, a poor use of space though, in the the low populated US wouldnt be such as issue, but land costs in Britain is over ten times higher and it wouldnt be viable. Just had a good look at that website, looks really cool. Cheap as well, shame i wouldnt be able to get one in Britain for those sort of prices. Damn site cheaper than the average prices round my way of $300K for a 15'*27' house. :) Edited September 13, 2004 by Jay1b Quote

jspencer Posted September 14, 2004 Posted September 14, 2004 Hurricanes don't suck, they blow. It's tornados that suck. You've got your storms all mixed up! ;-) Quote
