ThePentiumGuy Posted September 6, 2004 Posted September 6, 2004 Hey, Has anyone ever gotten spammed by ... spammers? :P? Well, for me, Hotmail doesn't seem to be blocking Spam from certain people - these peeps have stuff like "Dai.ly Promotion" "Info D.Aily" stuff like that in their but their "email account" is a bunch of random letters and numbers - so when I hit block, they get a NEW address the next time (a different bunch of random letters and numbers). I get these emails in sets of 4 or 5, with attachments (about 250 kb or so). After 6-8 hours, i get flooded with 4 or 5 more emails. *Sigh*. Normally I could care less because I can just hit delete ;). But now I'm starting to realize that if I don't check my email every 6-8 hours or so, my email will uhh... "overflow" (go beyond the 2 mb limit of hotmail). Heh, I checked my mail one day (after about a week or so) and I found it nearly 100% full. I would have found a LOT more, but hotmail has a policy or whatever that when you go beyond the limit, it prevents you from receiving more mail. THIS IS BAD :) <-- this prevents me from receiving mail from my friends, family, newsletters and such. Remember, I cant hit block becuase the address is randomly generated.... and yes, my junk mail filters are set to High. Anyone know of any solution to this dilemma? -The Pentium Guy Quote My VB.NET Game Programming Tutorial Site (GDI+, Direct3D, Tetris [coming soon], a full RPG.... you name it!) vbprogramming.8k.com My Project (Need VB.NET Programmers) http://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/ResolutionRPG
Leaders Iceplug Posted September 6, 2004 Leaders Posted September 6, 2004 Hm... well I get about 30-60 junk e-mails a day, inviting me to "Elnarge" something, buy some "meidicne", and more. But fortunately, Yahoo moves it all to the Bulk Mail folder, which does not count towards my e-mail percentage (that, and the fact that it's already 100MB of free space. They started this recently). But, just to ease my mind, I can simply click on Empty next to Bulk Mail and all of my spam will go bye-bye. :) Looks like you aren't having a good time blocking them with Hotmail. :-\ Quote Iceplug, USN One of my coworkers thinks that I believe that drawing bullets is the most efficient way of drawing bullets. ThePentiumGuy Posted September 6, 2004 Author Posted September 6, 2004 Hm... well I get about 30-60 junk e-mails a day' date=' inviting me to "Elnarge" something[/quote'] *Cough Cough* *Ahem* Yeah I get those emails a lot o_O. Fortunately THEY stay in my junk ;p. I really hate Hotmail's junk mail filtering, ANY pop3 mail (from friends..etc)- its in the junk. It's so annoying :P. AND - hotmail is blocking (its BLOCKING, not sending it to the junk) mails from gMail. My friends have sent me a bunch of mails (from gMail) apparently, and I haven't gotten any of them (they're not in my like.. 4 pages of junk either). Why is hotmail hesitating to increase their email space?? I got a mail about... 1 or 2 months ago (about a week after yahoo made theirs 100 MB), saying "In the next few weeks Hotmail will increase their email space to 150 MB".... *Experts* Bucky Posted September 6, 2004 *Experts* Posted September 6, 2004 My ISP has a spam filter which I had to turn up a few notches, but now it catches a large percent of spam. The stuff that does get through, Outlook 2003 catches, so I only end up with 1 or 2 spam messages a day actually cluttering my inbox. I love it. MadMaxMSCN Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 I'm @gmx.de have 1GB of space here and the spamfilter is very good. it blocks almost everything i don't want to get and it never blocked a mail it should have not blocked. the only "spam" it doesn't block is the gmx-newsletter ;-) Quote
Jay1b Posted September 7, 2004 Posted September 7, 2004 i have a number of hotmail accounts. One of which was upgraded to the 250mb storage (free of charge) months ago, no sign of it yet on any of my others though.... Dont know why they have upgraded just the one account. I dont have a problem with Junk mail on hotmail. i use to get 40-50 a day then they enhanced there junk mail protection about 6 months ago, now i get maybe 1 or 2 a day. Have you set up intelligent filters? Quote

Stopping putting ur name down on porn sites usually helps. That's precisely why I use a different mail for that! ;). Just kidding - I think it has to do with signing up for various things. For example, ZoneAlarm asks you to enter your email for when you install it - im sure this is their way of "Spyware" - they ask for your mail and give it to 3rd party peeps which give it to someone else which in turn sends those kinds of mails to you and ZoneAlarm (and other programs/sweepstakes/mailing lists/ possibly some forums) makes the profit. Jay1b Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 Yeah i know, i have a few email accounts. One which i use only for temporary things, i will give this address to everyone and thing that asks for one. One which i will give to most sites and people, including this one. One which is purely for friends and family, and when i was job hunting. I never give this out to sites - except jobsites obviously. Quote

Jay1b Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Yes. The oldest of them was converted before the second oldest. I think they are probably upto account created somewhere in about 1999/2000 by now then. Quote
ALEX_0077 Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004 folks. i think i gotta brain storm. (maybe a brain leak, dunno) I noticed how stuff like "WarezP2P", fake e-mails, and Spoofing all make up random numbers. Simple, .. ok. I also noticed that ALOT of proffesional grade software such as SwishMax use random numbers mixed with the date and time of download to encode/decode their product key. ... stay with me here ... wouldn't it be viable to make some sort of way to allow your e-mail to periodically change its "address", so that spammers can't track you, but anyone on your address book CAN. ??? ... just an idea. :) Quote Me = 49% Linux, 49% Windows, 2% Hot gas. ...Bite me. *Experts* Nerseus Posted September 30, 2004 *Experts* Posted September 30, 2004 My filter (very simple): Any mail from people in my address book stay Everything else is put in a folder I call "Junk", which I delete about twice a day (it gets big quick). If anyone wants to send me something, they'd better be on my list or they don't get through. If I sign up for something new (like a Credit Card service), then I have to scan the Junk folder for a little while to catch all their emails and add them to my filter. This is the "I only keep what I'm sure I want" filter - everything else is Junk by default as opposed to most filters which try to spot the junk. -ner Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. ThePentiumGuy Posted October 2, 2004 Author Posted October 2, 2004 Sigh.. I'm still waiting for my Hotmail account to get 250 MB... In either case - I'm gonna switch to gmail ( <doh> I haven't gotten an invite yet </doh> ). The junk mail filters in hotmail REALLY suck. Half the time they get rid of NEEDED mail, and think junk mail is normal ;). The only real reason I use msn is for convenience - I'm on MSN Messenger 24/7 and it notified me when I get mail <not that this is a help... every once in a while I get conecutive boxes saying " You have 1 new email message " "You have 2 new email messages" ...etc within like 5 seconds of each other. I hope the junk mail filters on gMail are good :-D! I also hope that mails from your contacts go to one folder - and mails from people that COULD be your contacts go to another folder and junk mail goes to... your junk mail folder. In response to the previous post... I don't really think that's possible o_O. Edit: I meant the post before that one - the one where he said email accounts could change their "adress". -The Pentium Guy Quote My VB.NET Game Programming Tutorial Site (GDI+, Direct3D, Tetris [coming soon], a full RPG.... you name it!) vbprogramming.8k.com My Project (Need VB.NET Programmers) http://workspaces.gotdotnet.com/ResolutionRPG
ThePentiumGuy Posted October 3, 2004 Author Posted October 3, 2004 Woah. I just got gmail :-D. Obviously I haven't gotten any junk mail yet :). I think i'll use hotmail for my mailing lists (cuz im always on Messenger and I can receive updates such as "you have just received a new mail from...", and gmail for personal mail :-D... wow :) So far so good - the only quirky thing i noticed is that the interface is plain, but hey im not complaining -> less loading time ;p. *Experts* Volte Posted October 3, 2004 *Experts* Posted October 3, 2004 My ISP address has become all but useless, getting upwards of 1500 or so spam messages per week. I have switched to a Gmail account and it has been blissfully spam-free for the few months I have had it (since June 16). I must make sure not to publically display it, however, at least not in a bot-readable way. Quote
