using barcodes to keep track of student enrollments and other data

hey folks,

i am working on a Windows application (i am coding in VB.NET) to keep track of courses, students, instructors, student enrollments, student data, fees payment for courses, etc. It has come to my attention that this kind of application could greatly benefit from using barcodes/labels somehow, but i don't know how exactly. Anybody encountered a similar problem? If so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
