Aitmanga Posted April 5, 2004 Posted April 5, 2004 I'm speechless, so post your comments, and tell me how you feel about the new look for the Sun Java Desktop. Search for the Demo here: Proyect Looking glass Quote
*Experts* Volte Posted April 5, 2004 *Experts* Posted April 5, 2004 I don't understand... What's the point? Quote
Aitmanga Posted April 5, 2004 Author Posted April 5, 2004 Project looking Glass is a 3D Desktop environment running on Sun's Java Desktop. At the link I provided there is a video showing of this new technology. Just wanted to show it to you all, as it looks awesome :D. Quote
*Experts* Volte Posted April 5, 2004 *Experts* Posted April 5, 2004 I just watched the video, and it seems like a bunch of eye candy and fluff to me. :-\ Sure, it's kind of cool to rotate your Windows around in a 3D space and all that, but is it really necessary? Quote
*Experts* mutant Posted April 6, 2004 *Experts* Posted April 6, 2004 Just like VolteFace, I don't see a point in 3D windows other than eye candy. Quote
Aitmanga Posted April 6, 2004 Author Posted April 6, 2004 Just like VolteFace' date=' I don't see a point in 3D windows other than eye candy.[/quote'] IMHO I think it can be a great boost for the LINUX world, since it is an open source project, and different from the approach of just trying to pair what Microsoft does (Lindows comes to mi mind). As it is only in it's early stages, what we are able to see now is eye candy, as you both have said. But I believe in the near future applications using the 3D environment in a new and unusual way will begin to sprout. Remember that what we can see in the video is just your usual browser and Media Player running in 3D, but the real goal of this technology is to inovate and bring out fresh ideas to the computer world that wouldn't have seen the light on a 2D desktop. And that should have been the real goal of this post from the beginning, to see what other developers think can be done in this 3D environment.. Thank you VolteFace and mutant for your comments so, from now on, appart from your comments, I'd like to hear your ideas of software that can be made taking advantage of the 3D desktop. That been said, I get back to work... Quote
Arch4ngel Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 The first advantage that I see... is that windows take less place... so more space a little. Disadvantage... CPU cycle unneeded and RAM OR/AND Video RAM consuming... depend on what the program use to display. georgepatotk Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 Wao..... It is a cool stuff. I can't imagine how much I can sell my software with that looks. There are comments saying that it is unnecessary for the looks in systems/our software systems, but, did you guys ever notice that customers are always making decision based on the first look of the our software system?? Just imagine.... a prototype with 3D interface.... if I am the client, I will make it the first priority tender. I am just thinking whether .net 2004 will be that cool or not. Seriously, it will create a lot of new oppoturnities for us (software developers). Don't simply say it it unneccessary. Since someone has created it, we just sit down and think what we can do with it. how much money we can gain with it.. No harm, right???? And lastly, thanks JAVA for introducing that cool technology... Quote George C.K. Low
Arch4ngel Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 Hummm... well it's true that there's money to do. But I think that a client will pay for a working app rather than a cool 3d buggy apps. If this will be simple to code... Why over-charge them ? If this is hard to code... Why doing this instead of core process and debugging your app ? If it's a Windows implemented to all window. You won't be able to charge them for this. (I know it's Java... but Microsux always copy anyway) Every way you take... it take you to the same road. iebidan Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 soooo? looks cool, but what can I do there to help me boost the work of the employees in the company? I don't see the point on moving windows for a company, maybe for your house, a nice looking desktop Quote Fat kids are harder to kidnap
Arch4ngel Posted April 6, 2004 Posted April 6, 2004 I agree to that ! For house programming that's fun ! House program might look... darn HOT ! But for company... so hot that it could burn the secretary... so don't take risk :D My opinion is that it's not worth imlpenting it unless you have much of time or your goal is a damn nice window. (Don't forget that it's in Java..... for now) Quote "If someone say : "Die mortal !"... don't stay to see if he isn't." - Unknown "Learning to program is like going out with a new girl friend. Abaillie Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 Looking at the demo, you may get calls saying " I've lost my Word document over by the monument!" Quote
Arch4ngel Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 Lollllllll Not very useful and too much... service call :D Quote "If someone say : "Die mortal !"... don't stay to see if he isn't." - Unknown "Learning to program is like going out with a new girl friend. Aitmanga Posted April 7, 2004 Author Posted April 7, 2004 Ace under sleeve Lollllllll Not very useful and too much... service call :D Indeed, for now it doesn't seem to be very useful, but remeber that Sun has been loosing money for some time. Don't you think that if they are investing money in this kind of project, they have some kind of Ace under their sleeve? Quote
Arch4ngel Posted April 7, 2004 Posted April 7, 2004 Maybe an ace under their sleeve or a ready-to-explode bomb. I think it's gonna be a one way trip. Or they win. Or they loose. No middle success with this kind of change Quote "If someone say : "Die mortal !"... don't stay to see if he isn't." - Unknown "Learning to program is like going out with a new girl friend. iebidan Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 But Sun still has a rival really big, maybe this will be helpful for like the 72 guys that use Sun as a desktop OS, but for the other 12,541,987 users that use Windows we 're stuck with what Microsoft gives us (and be sure soon we'll have this too). So I don't see no Ace under the sleeve, it's just that they want their OS to look nice and beautiful. Besides buying a PC with Windows already installed is cheaper than buying a Sparc computer with this OS already installed ;) Quote Fat kids are harder to kidnap
Abaillie Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 In my line, I need fast functional and an easy interface. If I have a project to produce and i have to "Virtually walk" to the place i left it ( most likely a virtual bar with the virtual manager still looking for the virtual tab i took out) i won't be happy with all my hard disk and memory taken up making it look 3D. Then i have to buy the most top of the range water cooled 2050 bit grafx card so my desktop refresh rate is high enough to prevent me from getting dizzy at the jerkyness of the screen. I think i will wait until Microsoft Windows Matrix edition comes out so i can plug straight in and get nice help like ... " Windows has detected a fault ergo, you've lost your days work! ") Quote

Abaillie Posted April 12, 2004 Posted April 12, 2004 Just incase anyone is interested... You can get a demo 3d windows desktop at http://www.3dna.net/ Again, nice when you first use it, but i think its just novelty value. Quote
Redth Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 and there is also another project underway, this one done up in .NET as well :) http://www.hamar.sk/sphere/ check it out, it's a bit in its infancy, but it has potential... and actually, using it, i myself think this could be useful, if they had a better implementation of the taskbar, start menu, and system tray.... don't discard the idea right away... i'm sure back when guys were using punchards for computers if you told them in a few years they'd be using taskbars and windows for sperate programs, they wouldn't have believed you.... :) Quote
Arch4ngel Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Hummmm... yeah... maybe... but like you said... we won't believe you :D I think that's too soon to begin having windows like this. I think that before we will be getting in 3D it will take a major improvement to the OS and much more to the Video Hardware so that 3D app don't slow down the machine. Like previously said... it would be silly that at a moment we could say : "Hey! I lost My window! where does she is !?... can't remember... Oh yeah ! It is right near the traybar and she's so flat that she has a height of a few pixel." Hehe... maybe in the future but not for now. It's not a design problem that everybody want to come right now. Abaillie Posted April 16, 2004 Posted April 16, 2004 Taking all the comments in... I believe that there is absolute no point in producing a 3d OS environment when it is still limited to being displayed on a 2d format (monitor). Yes, it looks good - ish (or potentially just different) but will it improve my productivity? Give me one absolute unbelievable, Unequivocal, reason that 3D desktop on a 2D medium is necessary, and i will be sold! Well? Quote
iebidan Posted April 26, 2004 Posted April 26, 2004 I tried at home the http://www.3dna.net/ software, looks cool, but at one point I felt like playing doom, I don't see how this enviroment will help me to work faster or get my things organized ina better way, but I must say that it looks COOL Quote Fat kids are harder to kidnap
