Moderators Robby Posted January 8, 2003 Moderators Posted January 8, 2003 Does anyone know of any good .NET Web Hosting? Quote Visit...Bassic Software
*Experts* Nerseus Posted January 8, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 8, 2003 I'm not 100% sure, but I know Crystal Tech used to be made for developers, including the ability to send your VB6 code which they would compile and put into COM+ for you! They offer a .NET control center for "near system adminstrator" access to your website, but I don't know if they allow hosting .NET applications; you'd have to check their site for more details. They are very nice as far as other features (SQL Server, front page server extensions, etc). -Nerseus Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Moderators Robby Posted January 9, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 9, 2003 Good show Nerseus. :) They seem to have it all, and the price is fair. Here's their price comparison page for anyone who's interested...http://www.crystaltech.com/compare.htm Thanks much Nerseus. Quote Visit...Bassic Software
*Experts* Nerseus Posted January 9, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 9, 2003 Did you discover if they host .NET pages? There's also search engine just for finding hosts. I think it's webhostdir.com if anyone wants to do a bigger search... -Nerseus Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Moderators Robby Posted January 9, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 9, 2003 yeah, I used http://www.webhostdir.com before. And yes, CrystalTech does host .NET. Quote Visit...Bassic Software
Moderators Robby Posted January 9, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 9, 2003 Too good to be true? I found a free service http://dotnetplayground.com/features.aspx I'm sure they sell your name/address to everyone on the planet. (and maybe other planets as well :) ) Quote Visit...Bassic Software
*Gurus* divil Posted January 9, 2003 *Gurus* Posted January 9, 2003 Brinkster does .NET hosting as standard (not sure about in their free account though). Whether or not I'd recommend them depends on what the site is for, really. Quote MVP, Visual Developer - .NET Now you see why evil will always triumph - because good is dumb. Moderators Robby Posted January 9, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 9, 2003 I don't have anything mission-critical, but a solid up-time and speed are needed. (Whether it's for myself or a client) Until I host the site myself, I don't mind paying $30 US/month. After all, I've been paying for four years, so what's another few months. *Gurus* divil Posted January 9, 2003 *Gurus* Posted January 9, 2003 I'd skip over Brinkster and find something a little more professional. Quote MVP, Visual Developer - .NET Now you see why evil will always triumph - because good is dumb. My free .NET Windows Forms Controls and Articles
Moderators Robby Posted January 10, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 10, 2003 The one that Nerseus suggested looks pretty good. Quote Visit...Bassic Software
*Experts* Nerseus Posted January 10, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 10, 2003 My company has been using it for years with NO problems. We even have them hosting our email though we could just as easily host it ourselves. Again, no problems in years... And no, my company isn't Crystal Tech :) -Nerseus Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Moderators Robby Posted January 10, 2003 Author Moderators Posted January 10, 2003 It's great to hear that you have experience with them. Thanks. Quote Visit...Bassic Software
VisualDeveloper Posted January 22, 2003 Posted January 22, 2003 I personally prefer Brinkster's web hosting solution. The free account also includes the use of ASP.NET in your web application. *Experts* Volte Posted January 22, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 22, 2003 Like divil said, it's probably best not to use them, and find something a bit more professional. Please read the entire thread before posting. Quote
*Gurus* divil Posted January 22, 2003 *Gurus* Posted January 22, 2003 Brinkster is great for an amateur website. Quote MVP, Visual Developer - .NET Now you see why evil will always triumph - because good is dumb. My free .NET Windows Forms Controls and Articles
*Experts* Volte Posted January 23, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 23, 2003 Yeah, I know, I used to use it myself. :) But for a professional website, or even one where you're going to be getting a lot of traffic, Brinkster isn't very good. Not to mention the lack of free FTP. :-\ The pay one is not too bad though. Quote
*Experts* Nerseus Posted January 23, 2003 *Experts* Posted January 23, 2003 I didn't mention this before, but my company doesn't host any applications or such on Crystal Tech (mentioned above) so I can't speak for volume-performance. I'm not saying they're bad, I just have no experience with them for that. All of my company's websites are hosted by the client or locally (for Dev and QA servers that don't need internet access - just intranets). If you're looking for a host for large web apps I couldn't suggest anything. My experience has been that a client that wants good performance in a web app is usually going to host the servers themselves or find a dedicated solution (some clients use one in Phoenix, AZ that hosts the servers with dedicated optical lines) rather than an out-of-the-box web hosting company. -Nerseus Quote "I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over.
