To be honest I don't think Java looks all that great for the future. .NET seems to be going pretty good and should gain even more popularity as it gooes, unless MS does something stupid with it.
As for what's currently in demand I'd say it depends on the company, but C/C++ still seems to remain a language that you should know. I don't see it going away any time soon either.
Here in my country theres a big demand on Java programers. Its very used on serve-side apps, banks and every thing that needs high security.
But its good to know that .NET is going well in the US, cause what goes well there will end up doing it here too.
