OK so here I am with my first web site up and running only to find out the company I'm with are a bunch of no hopers!

I was locked out all last weekend and the weekend before that. They have no support at weekends and when the do reply to emails it's "well is't working now" WELL it wasn't at the weekend DOHHH!!!

I see a company called Infinology come out pretty good in the ratings war, anyone have any experiece of them as I'm migrating...can't be worse than the jokers I presently with.

So does anyone know how difficult or not it is to set up your own host and site from home? Remember.....I know nothing about this:confused:

.........but like the idea of learning, the quick way:D

We can not recommend a host unless we know exactly what you are looking for. Reliability is arguably the most important requirement, however there are numerous others to consider. What do you need from the host?

Also, hosting from your premises is usually a poor choice, unless you have the necessary equipment and know-how, which you outwardly admit you do not.

if you look at www.elpuerco.co.uk you will see I'm just in it for the fun and destraction from all life etc....

So it is for personal fun use and to supply the occasional downloads

I recently switched to http://www.discountasp.net and haven't had any problems. Domain transfer went smooth. Cost is $10/month. Can use Access DB for free or 50 MB of SQL Server space is a $10/month add-on (Not bad if you compare prices to other hosts offering SQL Server).

If you look for some linux hosting check out this page:

Now the best part, they had a service outage for couple minutes and they called me to tell me what happened :)

OK...thanks guys, food for thought.

At present I'm currently migrating to Inifinology.com which as usual being American means the service is better than what you get in the UK.

Examples.

I emailed my current provider on Tuesday early evening for help.....no response yet. On the same night I emailed Infinology who replied with exact and concise help withing 20 minutes!

If I phone my current provider I cannot get through until the afternoons and then a long wait on their queue!

I phoned Infinology from the UK to the States.....instant answer, instant help!

OK lets go for some real UK bashing :-)

Why is it if I order something from a company in the UK many times I have to wait upto a week before getting the goods, yet many times if I order from the States I get the goods within two days!!

The UK should wake up as it appears to still be living in the Victorian age!!

I didn't notice you were in the UK.

The best webhost (in terms of bandwidth, support and reliability) in the UK is Fasthosts. Their new shared hosting architecture is based on Windows Server 2003 and they now support the .NET framework too.

If you're looking for something cheap though, look elsewhere.

Thx Divil, being a impulsive kinda dude I decided it would be best to be with a UK hosting service, if only for the right time zone. So I investigated Fasthosts and was impressed, had a chat with them and now my transfer is well on the way :-)

I've been doing some research because i'm not satisfied with my company and so far like the one below that someone else here recommended but never used.
They have 24/7 telephone tech. support which is important to me . Prices look very reasonable.

Actually I did sign up for www.webhost4life.com and am so far pleased with the service. Everything you can imagine is configurable via web and you have full control over your entire site (ftp accounts, email accounts, sub domains, databases, etc, etc)

Wyrd, their $20 package looks great, and they give 300Mb for SQL Server, mine only gives 50Mb. But I am really happy with the service and the control panel, you can virtually do anything in the CP that you would do with a localhost. BTW, their CP is all coded in .NET.
