registration code

How does one go about buiding in a registration code area to a installation package. I see them all the time but never thought about what it takes to create one. Now I need to make one - LOL I have searched all over the net for something but only come up with sites for 'cracking' registration codes. HELP

For anyone else looking for this kind of solution - I found this. The price is $50. I think that is pretty reasonable It solves my problem, so that is definately worth $50 --LOL
