This is probably a stupid question, but does anyone know if Microsoft Visual C++ Express 2005 is actually free or is there some hidden cost?
If there is does anyone know of a free visual c++ compiler?

All of the express versions are free. The catch is that functionality of Visual Studio is decreased compared to other for pay versions of Visual Studio (the more you pay, the more you get, but it's not necessarily what you need).

If you are curious, djgpp is a g++ compiler for windows and I'm sure there are others.
