FREE UPGRADE?! What are they talking about?! So does this mean I can upgrade my Academic Visual Studio.NET 2002 ---> 2003?!?!

HOW?! I do have a Visual Studio .NET 2003 Folder in my Program Files that's ~5MB?! Is that it or something else?

If you own a Professional, Enterprise or Developer version you can buy a cheap upgrade from Microsoft to upgrade to 2003 but the update does not include Academic or Standard.

I'd like to get 2003 but I'm not buying another full copy, at least until 2004+, just because Microsoft won't let you upgrade the Academic version.

This is a relatively cheap upgrade too from Microsoft too. Its $30 on Amazon at the moment.

You can probably get by on 2002 though, 2003 is more of a service pack than anything.

Isn't Academic basically the same as Professional?

It is the same in features, but the patch won't install on it. There is a list on Microsoft's website somewhere which says 'The VisualStudio 2002 to 2003 patch will not install on:

*Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2002 Standard
*Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2002 Academic
*Microsoft Visual Studio .Net 2002 ....'

From the Microsoft Press Release:

Please note that only the above three products are eligible for this offer. The following products are not eligible for this promotion:

Visual Studio .NET 2002 Academic
Visual Studio .NET 2002 60-day Evaluation
Microsoft Visual Basic® .NET 2002 Standard (Note for customers in US and Canada)
Microsoft Visual C++® .NET 2002 Standard (Note for customers in US and Canada)
Microsoft Visual C#® .NET 2002 Standard (Note for customers in US and Canada)

This looks to me that the offer only applies to the upgrade, but has anyone actually TRIED the upgrade and had it fail because they have the academic version?

I'd like to know before I buy.

thanks

Sam
