Create an Instant Messenger

If I wanted a VERY simple instant messenger for people who were all logged in to the same site, where could I read up on how to do it?

Although if someone has some code, I would love it, but in the idea of give a man a fish/ teach a man to fish I want to do this on my own

goto mess.be it gives you examples of hove to create one base don MSN messenger. The site can be a bit tempremetal so give it a couple of tries if it doesnt load 1st time.
