connecting to network computer

Hi, I kinda new to vb.net so bare with me.
I'm have an app that needs to connect to different computers on the same network. I need to know what the best approach would be.

If anybody has any suggestions or sample code, it would really help.

Define "connect". A TCP connection?

What specifically will your app be doing? What sorts of information will it be transferring? Are there any security or availability requirements?
