accessing depth buffer

Does anyone know the way to read the z coordinate from the z-buffer of a pixel (I'm using directx 9 and C++)? I've been trying with surfaces, but it seems not working at all.

Plus, I must tell you, as you probably have already noticed, that my English is quite bad: that's just because I'm Italian, not 'cause I'm some sort of a dumb unable to speak properly. Thank you
