Just wondering if anyonelse thinks it's ironic that a .NET web forum is run with php.

Why not use ASP.NET?

Why is it ironic? This is a UNIX server which cannot run ASP.NET, not to mention that there are no packages available for ASP.NET which are as extensible as vBulletin.

I’m sure I’ve seen this observation before! May not have been this particular site though. It is a reappearing theme and highlights the fact that.net has some limitations which I’m sure Microsoft will correct shortly.

Make no mistake - ASP.NET is as or more powerful than PHP. It's still a toddler compared to PHP as of yet, though, so it's understandable that the same level of package is not yet available. However, I know of at least one that is being worked on by a moderator here Derek Stone. Check out an alpha at www.incandesoft.com.

[edit]Typo. Stone, not Stode. :p[/edit]

I have signed up at that link you provided, Now waiting for my confirmation e-mail.

I was impressed with the sign in because the signing procedure allowed me to select the international date format, Year, Month, Day which I think is important now that many communities are made up of people from all sorts of cultures.

Oh! The other important thing about the international date format is that if you include it in your file names, when you save archives of files in a folder you end up with a list of dates that are easy to sort.

Ideally it would be great if these forums ran off of ASP.NET, but server restrictions and lack of decent software puts a halt to any such idea. And, in reality, it doesn't matter. Even when I do release Incandesoft Forums I doubt iNET Interactive, the owners of this site, will convert to a Microsoft platform. It's simply not in their best interest to do so, and I for one understand that. They made a mistake choosing Linux as a platform. We need to be sorry for them, not aggravated! ;)

I disagree with you about a couple points here. First there are some great ASP.NET forums (check out the open source one on www.asp.net), and I don't necessarily think that a forum being so 'extensible' is a good thing. This forum has so many features now it takes 3 seconds for a page to load, and I have cable...

I'm not saying that using php and unix servers is a bad thing, hell I do it myself, it IS cheaper that ASP, but this new forum has too many features...

There are better ASP.NET packages than the one at www.asp.net, but none of them are as good as vB. Not yet, at least.

And also, this forum being extensible has nothing to do with the load time. Yes, the new forum takes awhile to load, but that's largely do to the largely graphical style that was introduced (an alternative is being worked on, by the way; no promises though).

The problem with the ASP.NET Forums project is not its feature set. It is not a commercial product which implies no support, and there's little guarantee that the project will continue in the future.

I agree with samsmithnz. I have broadband, but it takes more time to load. I see it loading and still blank for ages.

I think it doesn't matter to use Php for this forum, but asp.net seems better for me. :D At least I can compare.

It is ironic because Extreme Dot NET forum is using a UNIX server and php to have a .NET community discuss Microsoft development tools.

It would be comparable to using an ASP forum for UNIX developers to discuss MySQL and php.

Don't get me wrong, I couldn't care what platform the site was hosted on or ran with because I've gotten plenty from this site and appreciate the efforts of those that contribute. I was just offering my 'Random Thought' after seeing the new interface.

Well, just a thought but one might wonder if the use of Mono might be an option. Given that it is the Open Source version of .NET for Linux.

Personally I haven't attempted using it yet so I can't speak from first hand experience, but from the looks of the site looks like you should be able to run ASP.NET, C#.NET, and VB.NET on it.

Personally I don't have any problem with this forum being on Linux/Unix and written in PHP. I have gained some good knowledge from the folks and postings here.

Given the choice, I would rather it remain just as is knowing it was free of charge. I know Windows hosting is expensive. I run a Post Nuke site with a hosting provider on Linux using PHP. I am working toward another site to showcase .NET stuff I do. I won't name names or prices as I am not trying to advertise, but to get the same amount of space web wise and database wise, the .NET hosting provider will be charging 5 times what the PHP hosting provider for my Post Nuke site is.

Though Linux is free, it doesn't mean that windows is more expensive. Microsoft got the answer why. Check out at ms website.

Why is that? They include access to millions of Virus's as a free bonus? :D

No, didn't mean to imply Linux was "free" per say. Only meant to convey what I had found while researching potential .NET hosting sites. Also doesn't mean 'MS' is bad as I understand the pricing differences and only meant to convey that I'd rather have free use of this board and it reamin on Linux/Unix than have some other structure if moved to a MS environment.

To one and all have a great day :)

I am truely don't believe that Linux is virus free. It is open-source, everyone can easily find hole in its original source. It, linux, doesn't have any ease of use like windows. That's why most people, include hackers, call it *Elite* to be linux users, and do you think that hackers wanted to burn their home? No! They would rather hack Windows instead.

If one day Linux was the most popular, it would soon had the same amount of viruses like windows. :D Maybe even more...

I think most likely the reason it is not targeted as much is because not nearly as many people use Linux. Who would want to target only a small fraction of users when they could target millions?

I am not sure there will ever be a 'virus free' operating system. It seems the need or desire by some to do harm is such that they will always be out there trying to find a way to create a new virus for something.

For those of us who try to do good, well, we just need to be careful and keep our anti-virus software sets updated.
