2005 Master Pages

I've been playing around trying to get up to speed and have a question about the master pages. I've figured that it will be cool to have two content areas like a left and right content. It seems the page that loads loads the master page rather than the master page loading the contents...this makes since and seems to be the nature of master pages, but at the same time I like the old fashing 'frames' method where you really have two pages...so how could I get the master page to show up with one page in the 'left content' and one page in the 'right content' or is that just an idea that master pages simply wasn't intended for?

Thanks for anyone who has some input/opinion on this.
 
I was thinking that might be the route they wanted, I was hoping to cheat the system and have 2 pages shown in one like in the old frames days but figured I was implementing wrong...wish I had more time to devote to learning it....too much day to day 1.1 work...:)
