I'm running the win2003 pop3 service (POP3 Service Version: 5.2.3790.0).
I've installed it as a role and every thing works as it should except for password authentication when outlook attempts retrieve mail.

I have it configured for encrypted password file. I have multiple domains and multiple email boxes. The pop service accepts emails and places then in the correct box.

I've tried accessing the emails from the command line as well as outlook, I get a password rejected error message:

I keep getting the user/password prompt over and over again with this message:

"There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: 'Don Howland', Server: 'i4lll.org', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Logon Failure', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92"

I've spent weeks with different configurations and burned out two consultants, both know how to contigure it properly but don't know why it won't authenticate.

Is there anyone out there who knows about this kind of problem?

Thanks for any new ideas or suggestions.

are you logging in 'domain\UserName' ?

Windows Server 2003 with Exchange Server 2003? or Exchange 2000?
If exchange 2000, apply service packs

Try uninstalling Antivirus on the Exchange server.

NOTE - all these were found on the MS Site by just searching on '0x800CCC92'

problem solved

I'm using the standard pop3 service that comes with 2003. Not the Exchange server.

I solved it by sending the username from Outlook Express:

username@domain.com

instead of:

username

I tried domain\username but that's for the exchange or local

The pop3 needed the proper container reference... that was all.

Thanks to Joe Mama for pointing me in the right direction.
