Got it going now. I was docking the control hence, making it part of the mdiparent. So I just set its co-ords to the upper left position of where I wanted it and now it goes fine.

I had no troubles regarding framework versions. Both worked using their own framework it would seem. Nothing has blown up yet anyway!!

I am playing around with user controls and trying to replicate the toolbox menu as you have in the IDE. How can I achieve something like this so as its floating above any other forms that may be present (in an mdi environment) I basically have a usercontrol and when the mouse hover event fires, it resizes it and when it leaves, shrinks it back. Is this the right approach or do I need to draw it manaully using some other settings or overrides. Thanks

http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/vs2005/ Can download whatever language you use. Download was about 50mg, thats VS itself with no documentation. But be careful, once you install it, all of the file associations linked to your current VS version, will be associated with VS2005.

Just wanted to say I had no intentions on starting an argument from the last thread "Who's sick of hearing this?" I didn't get a chance to post again on the thread, but I won't even bother to say what my thoughts are. Too many people have their own opinions on the topic and try to force it upon others. I should of known that it would veer off like it did, even though most of the posts weren't even remotely close to what I first asked. Anyway, VS.Net Professional arrived on my doorstep today and now I have something new to play with!!! Has anyone downloaded the 2005 beta edition yet? I got it last week it is seems pretty good, considering its beta. I especially like the properties window that can be flipped over to the events for that control.

At work today and talking to a programmer, trying to tell him about the problems in his software. Anyway, got onto other subjects and talking about VB. His comments, "Well, VB is nearly a proper programming language now" He uses Delphi to do his programs, and from what I have seen of what he does, there is nothing that delphi does that VB can't do, except write multiplatform apps (unix, linux, etc) I would like to know who else hears this a lot when it comes to VB? I just don't think that people who use other languages realise that VB.Net is up there with the rest of the languages. I know that each language has its own uniqueness and can accomplish certain tasks easier than others, but when it all comes down to it, they all can be used to code a typical database application. Anyway, I had to bite my tongue when talking to him and it just makes me wonder if I should invest some time to explore other languages. The section I work in doesn't do any hands on developing, but we hire consultants to do the work. And the guy who uses Delphi is one of them. I don't know how many times I have told them I can do the same in VB, save them money and time, but it seems when you mention VB, they look the other way. Sorry for dribbling on a bit, but it's a frustrating thing I deal with every day. So, any tips on how to convince management to go with VB would be greatly appreciated.

DLL has a form, form has a picbox, picbox has a bmp

Where is the picture? Can you just use a path like "\images\yourpicture.jpg" which would be "location of your dll\images\yourpicture.jpg" -
Just thinking some more about it, why not just capture the keys pressed and if vs is open and its your play button pressed send the F5 command? Would this work? Of course the app to do it would need to be running all the time. But you could minimise it and dont show it in the taskbar, that way you wouldn't see it.

My guess is when you install the keyboard, you also install dll's. I have one of these new multimeadia keyboards and looking in the program files area there are plenty of dll's. I would say one of those dll's controls the key assignments. Just need to work out what api's calls to use. Must be available somewhere. I like the idea too, and I will have a look around as well.

I found the same, like Robby, even with high speed connection, it does take a bit for the pages to load. Plus, sometimes I can only get here once a week if I'm lucky because of work. Maybe there is a new secret underground forum that has free beer for members.

I thought it had mouse scroll (if your talking about a wheel button mouse). I have used mouse scrolling on panels (when scrollbars are enabled), whether or not its directly for the form or not, I haven't tried.

I have had VB.Standard (2002) for about 18 months and in that time there hasn't been any updates.....except the new framework which is useless for me anyhow. BTW, I am using the check updates in the IDE menus, so I don't know if there are any other patches around, probably 3rd party ones that fix some stuff.

Yeh, you have 2003 where myself and ThePentiumGuy have 2002. May be version specific.

Just restarting it works for me. Sometimes will also have the autocomplete not working and it won't recognise keywords eg, i type in dim and it should change it to Dim, but it won't. This only happens once or twice a week, so it's not too much of a bother.

I sometimes get a similar problem in VB.Net 2002 Standard, but with mine, if I start typing a word, maybe the first three of fours letter will appear and from then on in, the rest of the line doesn't show. But if I do a save with an invisible part of the line, next time i open it they are there. Best fix I found was to restart of VS!!

What do you get in an Academic Version of VS? In Australia, the VS Pro is around $2000 where an academic version is available for $140. Is it cut back or do you get the real deal version? *Edit - I think they are pretty much the same, going by Microsofts sites. Anyone know if you are allowed to sell any programs you write with academic version? I would think that this isn't allowed.

Yeh, 2005 is plastered everywhere on microsoft. Guess I will be waiting a bit longer to check it out then. It looks good, but you can never really tell from screenshots and what microsoft say about it.

Bit of a silly question, but where do you get Whidbey from? Is it available on CD or is it downloadable?

Thanks for your input, it has given me a few more ideas on this. You were mainly talking about running this type of program for a business where I just want this for home. I have a pc, my partner has a PC and there is a spare one(the one to be used for the backups). They are all networked in the same way a business would be though, but they are turned off at night, although would need the 'backup machine' to be on all the time. I'm only looking at doing this since it's such a hassle to copy all of the files between pc's when one needs a format and this is happening on a frequent basis, about 3-6 months. But, I will take into consideration your comments and go from there. Thanks.

I have seen many people asking how to force a shutdown of a pc, but this is what I want to do. I'm think of writing a service that when the computer is told to turn off, the service fires up and does a backup of specified folders to another computer on the network. I am thinking of giving a message asking whether or not to do the backup and if they say yes, then do the backup then shutdown the pc, otherwise shut the machine off without the backup. Is this possible......well anything is possible if you try hard enough!! Any tips on where to look, api's etc.

Thats what I thought..about the framework anyway.

This has probably been talked about before but I couldn't find it anywhere. I have VB.Net Standard 2002 and considering getting 2003. Are there any significant changes between the two? From the online vidoes from Microsoft, the IDE looks a little different, but thats the least of my concern. Might be able to get a brand new copy of VS Pro 2003 cheap soon, guy doesn't use windows and he is selling a copy given to him by a Microsoft rep. So I would rather get the this one over VB on its own.

I found the yahoo games to be the same, but some other sites the font has increased to a size where it makes it difficult to read.....as in the text doesn't fit in listboxes etc. Some sites won't even work. I get a security warning as you used to, but this is java's warning and you accept it and it still won't work.
-
Thats the one I installed. Think the software you get is a bit of overkill just to get a browser plugin working though.

I just got a new computer with XP Pro with service pack 1A and websites that use java won't work. I have XP Pro with service pack 1 on another machine and the sites work. I have looked a little around on the internet about this and it seems you have to get Java yourself as Microsoft aren't packaging it anymore...is that right? I did find something on Sun Microsystems site to download and I did, but the pages display differently than they use to. Anyway, who else has found this and what have you done, or is it me not installing something obscure that I didn't see?
